Film Talk: Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire is the little film that could. This movie has received tons of attention and has been nominated for award after award (10 Oscar nods!) including Best Picture. (It has already snagged a SAG and Golden Globe.)

When a Mumbai teen, Jamal Malik (played by Dev Patel) gets a spot on the popular Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire where he knows the answer to every question asked. Under suspicion of cheating, he is tortured and questioned by the police. As they interrogate him, we learned through flashbacks of his life, how he has come to learn the answers to each question.

The Pink Mixer saw this film after hearing much buzz and ado. Unfortunately, we had to sit in the 3rd row back from the screen due to a scheduling snafu with a friend, but we were still happily impressed with the story. What we don’t want to do is hype this film so much that you expect sheer and total greatness. Instead, we’ll just tell you that on a rainy Sunday afternoon (with one week until the Oscars!) we suggest you shell out your $10 for a ticket and spend a few hours with the cast of Slumdog Millionaire. You won’t regret it. And, if you’re like us? Your favorite part might be the very last two minutes of the film, when notes of Bollywood strike.
