Uber

While this will be ridiculously outdated news to some, in the past two weeks or so, we've had three separate incidents, with three separate people, who didn't know what we were talking about when, over the discussion about how one of us would get home or the frustrations of trying to hail a taxi, we said we'd just "Uber-it" home.

Granted, none of these people lived in densely populated urban areas, and none of them were really in the habit of hailing cabs home all that often.  But still.  Uber is a brilliant idea, an awesome and ridiculously easy service to use, and has already saved us when there is no cab in sight at least a hundred (slight exaggeration) times.  Everyone should know about it.

Let's say you need a ride somewhere - the airport? train station? around the corner when it's pouring out? home from the grocery store? Uber is your go to.  So long as you have a smart phone.  The company acts as a ride sharing/pick up service in dozens of cities around the world.  When you open the app, you'll be able to select your level of service - from the low cost option of Uber X, all the way up to SUV and Luxury.  Then, you're able to see how close your potential driver(s) are with an estimated arrival time.  (On average between 5-10 minutes.)  You "order" your Uber on the app, get a text confirming that they are on their way, and in a matter of minutes you have a text message and usually a phone call telling you that your ride has arrived.

Some might be weirded out that the UberX option is really just a person and their own car; which, yes, we admit struck us as a little odd the first time we used the service as well, but it's just so easy, cheap, and hassle free you soon get over any odd feelings about hopping in the back of a random person's Honda or Toyota.  It helps give piece of mind too that your drivers are star rated (apparently Uber drivers rate their passengers too so be on your best behavior) and we have yet to see anyone pick us up who didn't have a 4.5 or 5 star rating.

Our favorite part of the whole experience might be the fact that once your Uber arrives and gets you to your destination, no cash money ever changes hand.  The Uber app stores your credit card(s) which they charge automatically at the end of your ride. (We love that one can store more than one credit card in the profile as well, given our propensity to use Uber for both business - charge the corporate card! - and pleasure - use our own Visa.)  AND, the tip?  It's automatically included in your final charge.  Which is amazing for about ten different reasons in our minds, but mostly because it's one more hassle that's eliminated when one is trying to get somewhere they's gots to be.

Did we mention the app will even let you split an Uber fare with friends who are also Uber users?  Brilliant any way you slice it.

Still skeptical?  Uber will give you $20 off of your very first ride.  Use the promo code: Uberfy.

(And then let us go ahead and say we told you so.  You're gonna love it.)

Sounds a little scary to me. Even though the drivers are rated, how does one know it is safe? Be careful. But then again, cab drivers can be scary, too!
